Adventskrans / Advent Wreath

Nu het ’s avonds al donker is tijdens het avondeten, heeft M de traditie van vorig jaar terug opgepikt: kaarsjes aansteken en die na het eten uitblazen! Geweldig vindt hij dat, hoewel hij nog niet voldoende blaaskracht heeft om de kaarsen vlot uit te blazen. Meestal beademt hij ze gewoon…

Hij is ook heel erg gefascineerd door knippen en plakken, maar welke kleuter is dat niet? Om knippen, plakken én kaarsjes te combineren besloten we om samen een Adventskrans te maken.

• Wat hadden we hiervoor nodig:
• Een stuk karton van A4 grootte (de verpakking van een cornflakes doos bijvoorbeeld)
• Servietten, groen of met kerstmotief
• Aluminiumfolie
• 4 lange smalle kaarsen
• Rolletjes inpaklint in groen, rood, zilver, goud, …
• Een kinderschaar
• Een gewone schaar
• Houtlijm en silicone lijm
• Plakband
• Een ronde onderlegger of rond plat bord

We tekenden de cirkel die je hier vindt over op het karton en knipten deze uit. Dit doe je als volwassene best zelf, of je kindje moet echt al goed met een schaar overweg kunnen. Daarna scheurden we de servietten in stukken en plakten deze op het karton met de houtlijm.

Van de aluminiumfolie maakte ik 4 komvormige bollen met een platte onderkant. Dit gaat nadien de druppels kaarsvet opvangen. We plakten de vier vormen op de kartonnen cirkel met silicone lijm, op gelijke afstanden van elkaar.

Op dit punt liet ik M volledig vrij om met zijn schaartje lange en korte stukken van het inpaklint te knippen. Hij vond het heel fascinerend om te zien hoe ik deze nadien met mijn grote schaar liet krullen. Toen was het weer aan hem en mocht hij de stukken gekruld lint op de krans plakken met plakband (minder geknoei dan dit met lijm te doen).

Hierna plaatsten we de krans op een kurken onderlegger voor de stevigheid. Een rond bord of een plankje werken natuurlijk even goed.

Als laatste deed ik een druppel silicone lijm in elk vormpje en duwde ik de vier kaarsen stevig in de aluminium vormpjes. Stevigheid is hier het kernwoord, om brandgevaar te vermijden!

Zo, onze Advenstkrans is klaar! De eerste kaars hebben aangestoken op zondag 29 november. Elke volgende zondag mogen we dan een kaarsje meer aansteken, tot op 20 december alle kaarsjes branden! Veel plezier!

Now that the sky is pitch black during dinner time, M has picked up the tradition once again to light a few candles, and then blowing them out after he finishes his plate. He loves that, especially the last part, but he hasn’t got enough power yet to blow the candles out successfully. Mostly he just gives them some sort of mouth-to-mouth...

He is also very fascinated about cutting with his own pair of scissors and playing with glue, but which toddler isn’t? So to be able to combine cutting, glueing and candles we decided to make an Advents Wreath together.

Wat supplies did we need:

• A firm piece of cardboard (like the package of a cereal box)
• Napkins, green or with a Christmas theme
• Aluminum foil
• 4 long candles
• Rolls of wrapping ribbon in green, red, silver, gold, …
• A pair of kid’s scissors
• A pair of adult’s scissors
• Crafting  and silicone glue
• Scotchtape
• A round plate or cork pad, roughly the same size of the circle you are going to cut

So we drew the circle you find here on the cardboard and cutted it. You may want to do this yourself as this may be a little too difficult for your little one. Then we ripped and shredded the napkins into small pieces and glued them onto the circle. 

Then I made 4 bowl-shaped aluminum cups with a flat surface at the bottom. This will be the drip-tray for drops of candle grease. We glued the 4 bowls onto the cardboard circle with silicone glue, evenly distanced.

At this point I let M cut pieces from the rolls of wrapping ribbon, he just went crazy with his little scissors! Then he was extremely interested to see how I made the pieces of ribbon curl with my own scissors. I then cut off some pieces of scotchtape and let him tape the curled ribbons onto the circle. (this is less of a mess than using glue)

Now we placed the circle on a cork pad for more stability. A plate or plank may also do the trick.

Last but not least I put a drop of silicone glue in each bowl and pushed in the candles. Firmness is the key word here, to avoid unwanted fires!

So our Advent Wreath is now ready! We lit the first candle on Sunday November 29. Then every next Sunday another candles may be lit until all four candles burn on December 20! Have fun!
